What is this book about?
All books in the series can be read as stand-alones.
What I learned after last year’s distractions cost my hockey team our entire season? No more screwing up. No more screwing, period. As the new team captain, I need a new philosophy: hockey and school now, women later. Which means that I, Hunter Davenport, am officially going celibate…no matter how hard that makes things.
But there’s nothing in the rulebook that says I can’t be friends with a woman. And I won’t lie—my new classmate Demi Davis is one cool chick. Her smart mouth is hot as hell, and so is the rest of her, but the fact that she’s got a boyfriend eliminates the temptation to touch her.
Except three months into our friendship, Demi is single and looking for a rebound.
And she’s making a play for me.
Avoiding her is impossible. We’re paired up on a yearlong school project, but I’m confident I can resist her. We’d never work, anyway. Our backgrounds are too different, our goals aren’t aligned, and her parents hate my guts.
Hooking up is a very bad idea. Now I just have to convince my body—and my heart.

I really enjoyed this book, but not as much as the first two books, hence the missing half start.
I loved seeing Hunter’s perspective because we knew a little bit of his story from The Chase and The Risk, but we really got to understand his head space and his motivations. It thought he was funny and I loved reading from his point of view. And I thought Demi was also a really enjoyable MC.
But - and if you read the synopsis it is not a spoiler - the fact that the story begins with Demi in a previous relationship bothered me a little. And it is not only this book, I read other romances where one of the MCs is in a relationship at the beginning of the book. Personally, I am not interested in « cheating romances » - and this book was not.
But then the problem, in my opinion, is that the break up as to make sense and the previous partner has to turn into a jerk/bad person, which takes time, if you want things to be realistic.
And Elle Kennedy did that perfectly. But this also means that the actual couple I was shipping, can only begin halfway through the book. Which was the case for The Play, in my opinion.
So I always have mixed feelings about these kinds of books because I want to two MC together, yet things shouldn’t be rushed either.
But besides that, this book was still really good, still fun and the tension between the MCs was still amazing, especially their banter! Their actual relationship was still amazing to read. I really love this series and I sad I’m already reaching the end of it!
