The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

The Hating Game

What is this book about?

Lucy Hutton and Joshua Templeman hate each other. Not dislike. Not begrudgingly tolerate. Hate. And they have no problem displaying their feelings through a series of ritualistic passive aggressive maneuvers as they sit across from each other, executive assistants to co-CEOs of a publishing company. Lucy can’t understand Joshua’s joyless, uptight, meticulous approach to his job. Joshua is clearly baffled by Lucy’s overly bright clothes, quirkiness, and Pollyanna attitude.

Now up for the same promotion, their battle of wills has come to a head and Lucy refuses to back down when their latest game could cost her her dream job…But the tension between Lucy and Joshua has also reached its boiling point, and Lucy is discovering that maybe she doesn’t hate Joshua. And maybe, he doesn’t hate her either. Or maybe this is just another game.

I love romance and rom-com type of books, but I never really been surprised by any of the ones I read, until The Hating Game

During the first three quarters of the book, I could not predict what was going to happen, and every time Josh and Lucy did or said something, I was completely mesmerized by the direction this book was taking. And it was so refreshing, I mean I never really considered romance page turners but this one was just amazing!

Since I finished it, I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. I loved the premise of this book: office romances are always super fun in my opinion, but if you add an enemies-to-lovers trope, you get this tiny jewel of a book.

I absolutely adored Lucy and Josh’s banter, and the tension between these two was just completely electric! Both are super quirky characters in their own way and it just make them perfect for each other! I just loved reading about their journey and them playing around with each other.

I have to admit that I struggled a little at first with the way it was written, I had to re-read sentences to make sure I understood them correctly and sometimes I struggled a bit to understand who was talking and when (especially in scenes where Lucy and Josh argued), but then once I got familiar with the style, it became easier to follow.

So, overall, I simply loved this book so much, I want to re-read it already!
