What is this book about?
Cordelia Carstairs is a Shadowhunter, a warrior trained since childhood to battle demons. When her father is accused of a terrible crime, she and her brother travel to London in hopes of preventing the family’s ruin. Cordelia’s mother wants to marry her off, but Cordelia is determined to be a hero rather than a bride. Soon Cordelia encounters childhood friends James and Lucie Herondale and is drawn into their world of glittering ballrooms, secret assignations, and supernatural salons, where vampires and warlocks mingle with mermaids and magicians. All the while, she must hide her secret love for James, who is sworn to marry someone else.
But Cordelia’s new life is blown apart when a shocking series of demon attacks devastate London. These monsters are nothing like those Shadowhunters have fought before—these demons walk in daylight, strike down the unwary with incurable poison, and seem impossible to kill. London is immediately quarantined. Trapped in the city, Cordelia and her friends discover that their own connection to a dark legacy has gifted them with incredible powers—and forced a brutal choice that will reveal the true cruel price of being a hero.

I only started reading Shadowhunters books this year because I never really was interested in them before. But reading every book from the start was a journey and Chain of Gold was the finish line. It’s actually the book that made me want to starts reading from the Shadowhunter universe, so the pressure was real 😉
I enjoyed reading The Mortal Instruments, but I had already seen the film and the tv show, so I wasn’t really wowed by them. But then I read The Infernal Devices and I fell in love with these books. Since then, every time I read a Cassie Clare book, I think it can’t be as good as the previous one, and I am wrong every time!
And Chain of Gold proved me wrong, yet again! Cassie has a way of creating relationships and tension between characters that is just wow. It’s always a little hard breaking because they’re not endgame from the start, but I just love the way she constructs them!
Cassie Clare also manages to create these books that are a perfect mix of laughter, heartbreak and happiness, and I don’t really believe in perfect books, but hers are usually close to it!
In Chain of Gold, we focus on a few characters and I absolutely loved every one of them. But of course, my favorites are James Herondale and Cordelia Carstairs. We knew a little bit about James from the short stories bind up, and I mean, he is Will’s son, so I adore him! But we discovered Cordelia in this book, and I loved her character so much! She is so relatable and funny and badass and I am rooting for her so bad!
Also, I loved The Infernal Devices and The Dark Artifices so so much, but I think Chain of Gold might be my all time favorite Cassie Clare book, at least for now!
